In Dahl, salt-sensitive rats fed a high-salt diet, spermidine supplementation reduced systemic blood pressure and prevented cardiac hypertrophy and diastolic dysfunction, thereby delaying the progression to concentric heart failure. Spermidine can upregulate the expression of epithelial stem cell-related keratins K15 and K19, as well as key target genes in human scalp hair follicles (HF) such as POP3 (which regulates cell adhesion and migration), SYVN1, NACA, and SLC25A3 (involved in endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondrial function). This demonstrates that spermidine is a potent stimulant for human hair growth and a modulator of human epithelial stem cell biology.
Oral administration of a spermidine-containing nutritional supplement once daily for 90 days can promote an extension of the anagen phase and reverse the transition from anagen to catagen and telogen phases. These effects are partly attributed to increased proliferation of hair bulb cells and reduced apoptosis.
